Read the story below and write an ACES paragraph about the theme you choose.

The Boy Who Cried Wolf

The shepherd boy watched the flock of sheep by day and guarded them at night. His only relief came when his master’s wife came by with his dinner wrapped in a cloth.
The shepherd boy was tired of working all the time. It wasn’t really difficult work, but it was tedious. His job was to watch the sheep, and, if one strayed, to guide it back to the flock. He also had to be on the lookout for wolves and ready to run for help if one approached.
The boy was lonely and bored. One afternoon, he had an idea that he hoped would put an end to his loneliness. He ran into the village and yelled, “Wolf! Wolf!” The townspeople ran with him into the field. They spent hours looking for the beast, behind briers and rocks, but there was no wolf. The boy had enjoyed having all the people with him and was sad to see them return to town.
A week later, he was again feeling bored and lonely. He ran into the village and yelled, ”Wolf! Wolf!” Again, the people followed him back into the field. Again, there was no wolf. The mayor yelled at him. “Don’t you come into town again with your tales. The people are too busy for your games!” It seemed to the boy that he would never have visitors again.
The next week, he sat watching his sheep. Suddenly a wolf ran out from the forest. It headed straight for his flock. He ran as fast he could into town. “Wolf! Wolf!” he screamed. But nobody came. “There really is a wolf! Please help me!” he pleaded. But the people turned their backs to him.

Explanation:

This article was published in the May/June 2013 issue of Cobblestone magazine. As of 2019,
Congress still has not passed the DREAM Act.
1. On a typical day, about 21,000 U.S. border control agents process nearly 100,000 people.
They monitor 7,000 miles of land and 2,000 miles of coastal waters at 329 ports of entry.
Border control agents work to keep the borders safe while also overseeing lawful
international trade and travel.
2. They also prevent about 1,000 people from entering the country illegally every day. Yet
some people still get through, and those numbers are adding up. Nearly 11 million
immigrants in America [as of 2013] have come here illegally. That means they are living in
the United States without the proper documentation and inspection. As illegal or
undocumented people, they risk deportation if they are caught. Deportation is an order to
leave the United States and return to one’s country of origin. . . .
3. In June 2012, President Barack Obama rallied for immigration reform and supported a
proposal that would help young people who were brought to America illegally by their
parents. To qualify, a person has to have been in the country for at least five consecutive
years and be willing to go to college or serve in the military. Illegal immigrants who arrived
when they were older than 16 and criminals do not qualify. Nearly 2 million people under
the age of 31 could qualify under this act and realize their dreams of studying, working,
and staying in America. If all goes well, each might reach the hope of one day becoming a
U.S. citizen.
4. This idea, called the DREAM Act, has been floating around Congress for more than 10
years without any resolution. There are many viewpoints to consider.
5. Imagine you’re in a room of spokespeople for and against the DREAM Act. Each speaker
comes to the front of the room to state his or her opinion. Listen carefully.
Pro: For the DREAM Act
6. Douglas, from Guatemala: I came to this country when I was 13 with my parents. They
came to find better opportunities. With this act, I can get a better-paying job and attend
college. I won’t have to worry about deportation. I’ll truly feel like an American.
7. Brenda, from Mexico: We came here when I was five. My parents had no way to support
our family in Mexico. There were no jobs. I have no memories of Mexico. I want to go to
college, maybe even become a nurse. But without documents, I cannot get financial aid to
help me pay for my education.
8. Hugo, from Argentina: I hate waking up each morning thinking it could be my last day in
America. I feel like I am an American, but the government sees me as an “alien.” I speak
only English and I’ve never broken any laws!
9. Cinthia, from Haiti: I was an honor roll student in high school and I dream about
becoming a doctor. I can use the money I earn from a steady job to help pay for college.
I’m willing to work hard for what I want. My parents taught me that.
10. Jose, prize-winning journalist, from the Philippines: In order to stay in this country, I
had to forge more documents than I can count. I used a friend’s address to get a driver’s
license. I never know if or when I will get caught.
11. Presidential candidate: The young people we are trying to help consider the United
States their home. They view themselves as Americans. We need to find a way to address
this issue on a national level.
12. Newspaper columnist: These immigrants are badly needed for our economy and our
military service. And, if we force them back to the countries they came from, we are simply
telling them we don’t care. Is that the message we want the world to hear?
Con: Against the DREAM Act
13. Border official: Like any other immigrants, these people should have to pass a standard
U.S. citizenship examination.
14. Enforcement agent: I would normally take an illegal immigrant into custody for a violation
such as driving without a license. Now I’m not sure what I’m supposed to do.
15. Congressman: The act breaks a promise to the American people. Nearly 2 million
people, who arrived here without any documentation, can take spaces in colleges and jobs
away from U.S. citizens.
16. Presidential candidate: What we really need is a high-technology border fence so we
don’t have illegal immigrants in the first place.
17. Capitol Hill correspondent: Passage of this act will encourage even more illegal
immigration. We should close the borders now and enforce a more aggressive anti-
immigration policy.
18. Newspaper columnist: Fake IDs and driver’s licenses are a way to break into American
society. We open ourselves up to threats like increased terrorism if we don’t enforce strict
restrictions on illegal immigration.
19. Immigration attorney: I want to help families enter the United States, but they often have
to wait a long time before our quota system allows them in. Why should we reward those

Which quotation states where the central idea of the text emerges? in the story “Battle of the Bionics”

Answers

This question is incomplete. Here's the complete question.

Read “Battle of the Bionics” by Steve Murray

Which quotation states where the central idea of the text emerges?

a“On your mark, get set…go! The starter flag drops and the race is on. While their teams shout encouragement, the competitors reach their first challenge—a line of sofas.” (paragraph 1)

b“This unique event is testing the latest assistive technologies for people with disabilities. While certain technology isn’t allowed in the Olympic or Paralympic games, it’s at the heart of the Cybathlon.” (paragraph 2)

c“The World Health Organization reports that about 1 billion people—15 percent of the world’s population—have physical disabilities of some kind.” (paragraph 4)

d“Some pilots race bikes around the track by controlling their leg muscles with electrical signals. Others race through a computer game using the electrical signals they generate with their brains.” (paragraph 6

Answer:

b“This unique event is testing the latest assistive technologies for people with disabilities. While certain technology isn’t allowed in the Olympic or Paralympic games, it’s at the heart of the Cybathlon.” (paragraph 2)

Explanation:

The author reveals the importance of the Cybathlon as the central idea of the text in the second paragraph.

The introduction (paragraph 1) provides details about a race without disclosing much information other than sofas being involved, in an attempt to create suspense and engage the reader.

The information provided in the fourth and sixth paragraphs presents further details later in the text.

In the story “The Bet”, Do you believe there is such a thing as “internal freedom?” (This is the kind of freedom that the lawyer comes to know as he rises about his circumstances, though he is imprisoned.” Think of people in the news who have been imprisoned for their beliefs. In your opinion, are they “freer” than their jailers? If so, how?

Answers

Answer:

The expected response to this opinion-based question is:

1. Yes, I believe there is such a thing as "internal freedom."

2. In my opinion, those who have been imprisoned for upholding their beliefs are "freer" than their jailers on the basis of internal freedom, despite their external restraints.

3. I believe they are freer than their jailers because they are not constrained by feelings of shame or fear of consequences that chain many of us back, including the jailers. Expressing your beliefs despite the consequences shows that you have freed yourself from these constraints, choosing to do what you believe is right. It's doubtful that the jailers (as leaders of an institution that contributes to internal/external restraint) have achieved a similar amount of internal freedom.

Explanation:

Keep in mind that the response to this question is PERSONAL -- it's doubtful that there is a technically incorrect answer to the question as long as you back up your opinion. However, based on the lesson of "The Bet," this is an acceptable, common response.

Which evidence from paragraph 4 best supports the idea that many schools have mandatory uniforms for students?

“The Fifth Circuit Court ruled that the school's policy was constitutional and that students had failed to show that the policy suppressed free expression.”

“According to the National Center for Education Statistics, in the past decade the number of public schools requiring students to wear uniforms has almost doubled, to 19 percent.”

“In 2001, a group of students and parents in Texas took a school district to court contending that the school's mandatory uniform policy violated First Amendment rights.”

“In cases involving school dress codes, courts across the country have generally upheld school policies.”

Answers

School uniforms may improve student safety and reduce crime. Students are kept from becoming distracted by their clothing by wearing uniforms to school. By levelling the playing field for all kids, school uniforms help to prevent bullying and peer pressure. The wearing of uniforms fosters community spirit, unity, and school pride.

Additionally, less time is lost in class dealing with unsuitable attire. Students who wear uniforms can dedicate more time to school because there are fewer tardies and distractions. Because they allow kids to concentrate on studying rather than fashion, school uniforms help students perform better.

The most disciplined kids are those who achieve the best, according to the experts. Additionally, "our study indicated that children listen substantially better, noise levels are lower, and instructional waiting times with classes are shorter in nations where students wear school uniforms."

There may be more than two techniques being used.I'm growing fonder of my staff; / I'm growing dimmer in the eyes;I'm growing fainter in my laugh; / I'm growing deeper in my sighs;Which sound effects/devices are being used?A) alliterationB) onomatopoeiaC) repetitionD) rhyme/rhythm

Answers

Answer:

Two devices that are being used in the lines are:

C. repetition

D. rhyme/rhythm

Explanation:

Repetition is a literary device consisting of repeating the same word or phrase for emphasis or clarity. Repetition can appear in both prose and poetry, and it can also be a rhetorical device. In the lines we are analyzing here, the phrase "I'm growing" is repeated at the beginning of each line:

I'm growing fonder of my staff;

I'm growing dimmer in the eyes;

I'm growing fainter in my laugh;

I'm growing deeper in my sighs;

Rhyme is a correspondence of sounds between different words. In the lines above, we have a rhyme scheme of ABAB, that is, "staff" rhymes with "laugh" - lines 1 and 3 -, and "eyes" rhymes with "sighs" - lines 2 and 4.

As for rhythm, I believe we have an iambic tetrameter - a four time repetition of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed one. Take a look below:

I'm growing fonder of my staff;

Eerie as it may seem to drive alongside a car with no one behind the wheel, autonomous vehicles are poised to hit the roads in the next few years. A lawsuit between Uber and Waymo, self-driving car project, settled in February 2018 illustrates the fierce battle to develop driverless car technology. Many cars already employ semi-autonomous technology, such as parking assistance and lane monitoring. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) suggests that automated vehicles could promote safety on the road. According to NHTSA’s Federal Automated Vehicles Policy, 94 percent of car accidents are linked to human choice or error. Automated vehicles, the NHTSA writes, could reduce the frequency of crashes by eliminating some human error on the roads. The policy indicates positive features of automated vehicles beyond safety, including potential environmental benefits and increased mobility for those otherwise unable to drive. The cutting-edge technology, however, presents ethical questions and other concerns. Some research included in this roundup indicates that the environmental effects of widespread adoption of autonomous vehicles might not be positive. Safety benefits are not so clear-cut either.
