Nearsightedness Study
Myopia, or nearsightedness, results from a number of genetic and environmental factors. In 1999, Quinn et al studied the relation between myopia and ambient lighting at night (for example, from nightlights or room lights) during childhood.
Question 1. The data were gathered by the following procedure, reported in the study. "Between January and June 1998, parents of children aged 2-16 years [...] that were seen as outpatients in a university pediatric ophthalmology clinic completed a questionnaire on the child’s light exposure both at present and before the age of 2 years." Was this study observational, or was it a controlled experiment? Explain.
Write your answer here, replacing this text.
Question 2. The study found that of the children who slept with a room light on before the age of 2, 55% were myopic. Of the children who slept with a night light on before the age of 2, 34% were myopic. Of the children who slept in the dark before the age of 2, 10% were myopic. The study concluded that, "The prevalence of myopia [...] during childhood was strongly associated with ambient light exposure during sleep at night in the first two years after birth."
Do the data support this statement? You may interpret "strongly" in any reasonable qualitative way.

Question 3. On May 13, 1999, CNN reported the results of this study under the headline, "Night light may lead to nearsightedness." Does the conclusion of the study claim that night light causes nearsightedness?
Write your answer here, replacing this text.
Question 4. The final paragraph of the CNN report said that "several eye specialists" had pointed out that the study should have accounted for heredity.
Myopia is passed down from parents to children. It's also reasonable to suppose that myopic parents are more likely to leave lights on in their children's rooms than other parents. In what way does the knowledge of this possible genetic link affect how we consider the data?

7. Studying the Survivors
The Reverend Henry Whitehead was skeptical of John Snow’s conclusion about the Broad Street pump. After the Broad Street cholera epidemic ended, Whitehead set about trying to prove Snow wrong. (The history of the event is detailed here.)
He realized that Snow had focused his analysis almost entirely on those who had died. Whitehead, therefore, investigated the drinking habits of people in the Broad Street area who had not died in the outbreak.
What is the main reason it was important to study this group?
1) If Whitehead had found that many people had drunk water from the Broad Street pump and not caught cholera, that would have been evidence against Snow's hypothesis.
2) Survivors could provide additional information about what else could have caused the cholera, potentially unearthing another cause.
3) Through considering the survivors, Whitehead could have identified a cure for cholera.

Note: Whitehead ended up finding further proof that the Broad Street pump played the central role in spreading the disease to the people who lived near it. Eventually, he became one of Snow’s greatest defenders.

Mental health disorders are not really diseases.
Please select the best answer from the choices provided.
ОТ
OF

Answers

Answer:

False

Explanation:

Mental health disorders are diseases.

True.

Some people CONSIDER mental health issues diseases because they find the whole ordeal to be a leading quality that results in death. However, this is not true whereas diseases are separate living organisms (not like animals I mean like a virus) and cannot be spread through physical touch or from breathing in gas. Nothing physically existent can give you a mental health issue. Mental health issues are a product of either mental trauma or emotional trauma (like nightmares or extreme depression).

No matter what anyone says a mental health issue is not a disease whereas it is not a pathogen. Pathogens are harmful bacterias and viruses that assault health, however mental issues cannot be considered a pathogen whereas they originate from humans and it is PART of a human, not a seperate living organism.

Hope this helps.

What does it mean to be Anorexic? Use in your own words.

Answers

Answer:

What it means to be anorexic is when you have a rational fear of eating food because you don't want to gain weight and results in developing an eating disorder. It causes means to have extremely low weight, low energy, and wanting to excessively exercise and starve oneself.

WELL......

In my case, it is a fear and obsession of not gaining weight and of losing more. Many exercise, sometimes excessively. They try and eat based on their want to lose weight which pretty much always ends up being an unhealthily low amount. But it is not just about losing more and more weight until there is nothing more to take. It is also a coping mechanism. Just the same as self-isolation, self h*rm, or any other unhealthy means of coping. Many with anorexia have triggered the eating disorder based on something going on in their life. It could be a death, dep*ession, pressure from school or parents, or even something as simple as moving somewhere new. In my case, I already had dep*ession, so when I developed an e.d. [eating disorder], it was most likely my way of coping with that and everything else going on in my life. So although my outward intention was to lose weight, it was also to get some sort of control and cope with my life. It is the same for many.

Basically, a day in the life of one anorexic example [me] would probably include waking up, using the bathroom, and stopping to look at my body in the mirror for 1-15 minutes (usually about 10). Weighing myself. Skipping breakfast. Doing homework. Cleaning. Skipping lunch. 30+ minute exercise. Probably fake eating something if my parents are home. Mirror check. Maybe another weigh-in. Probably a lot of fidgeting and shaking throughout the day to burn more calories at all times. Thinking about food, calories, and my weight almost all day. Skipping dinner if possible or hiding/throwing away my dinner without anyone knowing. If I have too, I would eat it and then secretly inflict vomit. [I would probably lose control and binge and purge on a day like this about once a month, due to the extreme hunger. And cry about it once I'm in my right mind.] At the end of the day, I would record everything in a notebook or my computer.

But that is just me and my experience.

I hope that this helps give you a better idea.

Also, here are the side effects:Side effects are different for everyone and it widely varies which ones you do or don't have Hair loss [falling out] Loss of period (if are female) Increased chance of infertility Fainting/dizziness Severe mood swings Depr*ssion Anorexia often can lead to other eating disorders, such as bulimia and binge eating disorder Weight loss (minor-severe) Social withdraw heart problems and failure Brittle bones and nails Colder than average on a regular basis due to the lack of fat keeping your body warm

These are all of the ones that I could think of and I hope this helps. Stay safe everyone and please try your best to eat [im such a hypocrite, lol]

how do nicotine and tobacco cause cancer?

Answers

Answer:

Tobacco smoke has at least 70 chemicals that cause cancer, also known as carcinogens. Every time you breathe in that smoke, those chemicals get into your bloodstream, which carries the chemicals to all parts of your body. Many of these chemicals can damage your DNA, which controls how your body makes new cells and directs each kind of cell to do what it is made for. Damaged DNA can make cells grow differently from how they are supposed to. These unusual cells can turn into cancer.

The correct order of organization is cell-tissue-organs-organ systems-organism.

In biological organization, cells are the basic structural and functional units of life. Cells combine to form tissues, which are groups of similar cells working together to perform specific functions. Tissues then come together to form organs, which are structures made up of different types of tissues performing specialized functions. Organs further integrate and interact to create organ systems, which are groups of organs working together to carry out specific physiological functions. Lastly, all the organ systems combine to form a complete organism, such as a human or an animal. Therefore, the correct order is cell-tissue-organs-organ systems-organism.
