Q1. Read the following text critically and answer the questions given below.

In its widest sense, government means the framework and rules by which decisions that affect a community as a whole are arrived at and carried out. In a narrower sense, however, government is a person or body of persons giving effect to the framework or rules. There are different forms of governments depending on the manner in which a government is run such as monarchies, military dictatorships, civilian dictatorships and democracies. Monarchs, military men and civilian dictators often wield unlimited power which might result into tyranny and despotism. A democratically elected government exercises power and authority granted by the constitution and traditions.

A government is good, if it aims for the good of the people . The primary objectives for which such a government comes into existence are to maintain the rule of law look after its citizens without discrimination and fulfill their needs and work toward the establishment of welfare programs for the people. Only a government that has come into existence as an expression of the will of the people and adopts policies for the welfare of the people will have popular support. For this reason, a democratically elected government is certainly preferable to a benevolent dictatorship.

In the real world there are three important qualities which citizens look for in their governments. The first is that the government should be representative; the second, that it should provide a reasonable degree of stability; and the third that it should look after the wellbeing of its citizens.

The citizens of a country may sometimes demand policies that are short-sighted and disastrous in the long run. This is often seen in regard to economic policies. A good government is one that formulates and implements policies that are beneficial for the citizens and also ensure future prosperity of the country. That is to say, a good government should be expected to think for the future as well as act for the present requirements - about defense, economic development, education and employment.

A good government should rise above the narrow views of the people and take measures, however unpopular and repugnant they may be when they are taken, to solve present problems and ensure a bright future. It must be prepared to accept constructive criticism and enter into a dialogue with dissident groups with a view to making its policies and measures acceptable. It always aims at the good of the people. The men and women forming such a government are persons who have the support of the people with them in good or bad times.

To conclude, it may be said that a representative government i.e. a democratically elected government which is stable and which can act with circumspection and vision for the prosperity and welfare of its citizens as well as for the future of the nation as a whole is to be considered a good government. A good government should therefore take cognizance of what years ago Jean- Paul Rousseau wrote in his Du Contract Social about the ultimate source of authority of a good government. According to him, the government is only an agent of the people in whom vests the ultimate source of authority and for whom the government is functioning.

1.What is the author’s purpose for writing this article?
2. Write a suitable title for this paragraph.

Answers

Answer 1

Explanation:

1. The main purpose of the article is to enlighten readers about what an ideal government is and the various forms of government. We can make this assertion because from the article we notice several attempts at explaining the function of governments. For example, we are told, "There are different forms of governments depending on the manner in which a government is run such as monarchies, military dictatorships, civilian dictatorships, and democracies."

2. The title could read; What is a good government?

We can this suggestion because the article continuously informs readers about what is to be expected of a government that is good. For example, the phrase "a good government" appears about six (6) times throughout the article.

Keys Ideas and Details: Based on details in the poem, what inference can you make about the mushrooms' intentions in lines 30–33?

Answers

Based on the details in the poem by Sylvia Plath, the inference we can make is that the mushrooms' intention is to take over the world, as explained below.

What is an inference?

Inference is the act or process of inferring, which means reaching a conclusion based on information we have. For this question, we must read the poem "Mushrooms" by Sylvia Plath and analyze the details in lines 30-33 to infer what the mushrooms' intentions are.

Here are lines 30-33:

"Our kind multiplies:We shall by morningInherit the earth. Our foot’s in the door."

Since the speakers of the poem are the mushrooms, we can use the lines above to make the inference that it is the mushrooms' intention to take over the world. They multiply silently, without anyone noticing. They can grow anywhere and "inherit the earth."

With the information above in mind, we can conclude that the answer provided above is correct.

. What is the relationship between the people who
participated in the Primetime experiments and the
Germans who followed Adolf Hitler?

Answers

Answer:

They both show us that people are scared of publicly saying opinions, thoughts, and ideas that will contradict the majority and the person who is considered the leader.

Explanation:

The Primetime experiments included people who did the tests and then were ordered to say their results out loud. When put in the group of 9 people who cited their own results (who were ordered to follow the example of the person who supposedly had the results), the 10th person would most likely agree with others, no matter if the answer was right or wrong. This proved that people will more likely follow the example of others and the leader than to stand up to their own opinion and example their thoughts.

This supports that what happened in Nazi Germany is what people will likely do at any point for anything – follow the person that dictated. In Nazi Germany, citizens were following Adolf Hitler and the crowd that supported him, scared to voice their opinion and thoughts. This eventually leads to catastrophic consequences of millions of murdered people.

Therefore, we can conclude that the Primetime experiment and example of Hitler and the Germans can show us that, when put on the spot, people will most likely follow others instead of voicing their own thoughts.

Answer:

both groups show that people’s actions are controlled by their need to fit in.

“‘Daggone!’ he muttered, half aloud.”

“Most of the men knew him, condescendingly; he tipped his hat to three or four girls. That was all.”

“They would all be there — the old crowd, the crowd to which, by right of the white house, sold long since, and the portrait of the officer in gray over the mantel, Jim should have belonged.”

Hanbooks and yearbooks.

Atlases and bibliographies.

Explanation:

Dictionaries, Encyclopedias, Almanacs, Directories and Hanbooks and yearbooks.

What are reference sources?

Encyclopedias aim to present thorough summaries of information in either "everything" or a particular discipline (subject encyclopedias) (general encyclopedias).

The typical structure of encyclopedias is a collection of discrete topic-related articles. Encyclopedias with an academic focus frequently have brief bibliographies, which makes them a useful tool for finding important texts and articles on a subject.

Handbooks are "ready reference" publications that compile relevant information, terminology, and standards for a particular industry or profession. In the sciences, where they are found in formulas, constants, lab operations, and medical protocols, they are particularly prevalent.

The director adds optimism and humor to the story by being told by a 13-year-old girl.

Explanation:

The story of Anne Frank involves telling the story of the Holocaust, which is quite tragic. However, the author tells this through Ana, a 13-year-old girl who stars in this story with humor, optimism, anger and irony.

On her birthday, Ana got up with great enthusiasm to see the gifts they had given her; And, among those gifts, she finds the one she likes the most: a diary, which she will call Kitty. Life for the Franks was normal until the good times for the family ended in May 1940: first, because of the Second World War; then the capitulation and the German invasion. Little by little, the misfortunes for the Jews began, which deprived them of their freedom, such as wearing a Star of David sewn on their clothes in order to be identified, not traveling by means of transport, respecting the curfew, shopping only at a certain time. and do not enter public places. Things got even worse when the head of the family was summoned by the Gestapo.

Read the excerpt from “A Country Cottage,” in which a couple is relaxing near a train station. Which detail from the excerpt best marks the introduction of the conflict? excerpt adapted from A Country Cottage by Anton Chekhov "Let's see the train in and go home," said Sasha, yawning. "What a splendid time we are having together, Varya, it's so splendid, one can hardly believe it's true!" "Look! look!" they heard from one of the carriages. "Varya and Sasha have come to meet us! There they are! . . . Varya! . . . Varya . . . Look!" Two little girls skipped out of the train and hung on Varya's neck. They were followed by a stout, middle-aged lady, and a tall, lanky gentleman with grey whiskers; behind them came two schoolboys, laden with bags, and after the schoolboys, the governess, after the governess the grandmother. "Here we are, here we are, dear boy!" began the whiskered gentleman, squeezing Sasha's hand. "Sick of waiting for us, I expect! You have been pitching into your old uncle for not coming down all this time, I daresay! Kolya, Kostya, Nina, Fifa . . . children! Kiss your cousin Sasha! We're all here, the whole troop of us, just for three or four days. I hope we shan't be too many for you? You mustn't let us put you out!" At the sight of their uncle and his family, the young couple were horror-stricken. While his uncle talked and kissed them, Sasha had a vision of their little cottage: he and Varya giving up their three little rooms, all the pillows and bedding to their guests; the salmon, the sardines, the chicken all devoured in a single instant; the cousins plucking the flowers in their little garden. . . .
