Parasailing & Jetskis Tavernier, FL

Tavernier is centrally located among the Florida Keys and offers great watersports opportunities. From parasailing to kayaking, there are many ways to enjoy one of the lesser known, but no less impressive, Florida Keys.

Tavernier, FL watersports have a lot to offer locals and tourists alike.  Whether you prefer renting a parasail to take a look at this Florida Key Island from 1,000 feet in the air, or renting wave runners to enjoy the feeling of speed, there’s something available for everyone.  Kayak rentals can be for the shallow ocean flats near the shore, or for inland rivers and lakes that even approach mangrove ecosystem in some areas.  Sunset cruises and party boats give visitors other options to enjoy the amazing sunsets and beautiful scenery that the Tavernier Key has to offer in its ideal location in the middle of the Florida Keys, north of Islamorada and south of Key Largo.

If you want to get the most out of any Tavernier, FL watersports experience then it is important to understand everything the area has to offer.  Tavernier, like many of the other Keys, offers some amazing scuba diving and snorkeling sites ranging from the beginner difficulty level to sites only experienced divers should check out.

Hen Reef & Chicken Reef

The Hen and Chicken Reef is especially well known.  This is a series of neighboring reef systems that get their name because from the air it looks like a large mother hen in the middle with small chicks going each way from around it.

Many parts of the Hen and Chicken Reef are friendly to beginning snorkelers. More experienced divers can find great Tavernier scuba diving sites further out and there are plenty of professional guides and charters who know how to get to and safely explore those sites.  If you love exploring great underwater sites, the Tavernier Key is as great a place as any to trek out from.

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park

John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park is to the north of Tavernier and is a park worth checking out.  All the Florida Keys are located just south of the Everglades, and the Plantation Key is just a little to the south.  Tavernier is a good central location for visiting other parts of the Florida Keys, making it a good central location for what Monroe County has to offer visitors.  All these locations are tied together by the Overseas Highway.  Tavernier Creek is popular among anglers and visitors who just want to take a leisurely sight-seeing walk around the island.

The Keys offer some of the best saltwater fishing in the world, so if you want a full day out on the water, this is a great way to go.  Tavernier saltwater fishing can mean renting a charter for deep sea fishing for marlin and sailfish, reef fishing for a variety of popular saltwater fish like mahi-mahi, grouper, or snapper or even staying in the shallows and flats to take a shot at tarpon, redfish, or sea trout.  You may fish as near as Tavernier Creek or as far away as Florida Bay.

Parasailing is probably the most popular watersport in the Tavernier Key area, and it’s not hard to see why.  The Keys offer beautiful scenery, and many reefs and schools of marine life can be seen from the sky because of the crystal clear water.  Depending on which Tavernier FL, watersports provider you go with, you may have the option of parasailing 500 feet in the air, 700 feet in the air, or even a full 1,000 feet in the air.  This gives you quite a few views!  Most parasailing rides will be 15 to 20 minutes, and there may be an extra charge for “ride alongs” if you have friends or family riding along, but not heading up.  Some parasailing providers have rigs that allow two or three people to go up at the same time, which is definitely fun for couples or small groups of friends.

Wave Runners

Renting wave runners and jet skis is another popular watersport for this area.  You need to be careful to obey all local ordinances as some areas, like the aquatic state parks and refuges, don’t allow motorized water vehicles in the area.  However that still leaves plenty of space around Tavernier Harbor or the Cotton Key Basin where you don’t have to worry about protected park lands.  Most Tavernier, FL watersports charters will charge for the first half hour of rent, and then rental rates will go per hour after that.  Many jet ski rentals will have gasoline fees, too, so make sure to understand the full agreement before renting.

Saltwater kayaking offers several special opportunities around Tavernier that you might not get from the other Florida Keys.  Not only do you have the saltwater flats, but because of Tavernier Creek there are also local mangrove swamps and inland ecosystems that you can find on Tavernier that aren’t as easy to find on Key Largo or Key West.  This additional area and the inland creeks give you some interesting opportunities when it comes to kayaking and really enjoying all the natural beauty of the island.

Tavernier's Parks

Tavernier's parks are definitely worth a visit, including the Harry Harris Park and the Florida Keys Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center.  While down there you can also visit Dove Creek and Dove Sound for some easy kayaking, and the Plantation Key has its own quaint charms as well and is one of the more laid back areas in the Keys.  While in the settlement of Tavernier you'll want to take the time to stop for a meal at the Old Tavernier Restaurant and Lounge.  This local hangout is famous for being one of the best places to eat in all of the Florida Keys.

As you can see, there is no shortage of things to do when visiting Tavernier.  If you really enjoy parasailing, kayaking, riding wave runners, or any of a wide variety of other outdoor activities then you will definitely want to check out one of the many Tavernier, FL watersports charters or specialists.  It won't take long to find someone who offers exactly what you're looking for, and then you can enjoy Tavernier in style.
